Backstory
What is it? The dictionary defines 'backstory' as:
'The experiences of a character or the circumstances of an event 
that occur before the action or narrative.'

Once told that if my story was good enough it shouldn't need back story, I seem to fail every time! I believe that backstory can add depth to a character or a plot but the secret is how to write it without slowing down the story. And that's my problem. When reading, I have noted how experienced writers have introduced backstory - using alternate chapters written in different times, dual narratives, bringing backstory in through dialogue, reading letters or diary entries. When I received a rejected story back from an editor this week, I knew it was the backstory that let it down. It needed to be included because what had happened in the past to the main character, Amy, had a direct influence on the type of 'super woman' she was trying so hard to be but I'd ended up doing too much 'telling' and not 'showing'.  You've probably heard it said that what we leave out is as important as what we leave in was a comment in the feedback.

On my recent holiday, I did start a story set in Greece about a girl who travels there after following her mother's instructions to read her diary. I thought that I could tell the backstory of her mother's life in the early seventies through the diary entries. But, guess what? I'm bogged down with too much detail and the story has slowed almost to a stop. So what is the answer? 

When searching for some images to illustrate this post I came across this wonderful picture, entitled 'Backstory', which in turn led me to a blog post by Roz Morris . Her blog is called 'Nail Your Novel' which she describes as 'a diary of writing tips as I tackle challenges in my own novels and help others to shape theirs, plus all the latest news about my books.' I found her post 'How to wield backstory with panache' really useful and recommend it to you. She goes through a number of points and explains them with examples. Her main advice is to make backstory part of the action, leave it as late as possible and to use it to bond characters together (where the backstory is important to both characters). 

Where do I go from here? I shall look as my rejected story again and see whether I can prune a lot of the backstory. Maybe I'll be able to keep the part which affects the two friends, Lauren and Amy, but introduce it in smaller bits rather than in a 'pouring her heart out' scene as it was in the original story.

Setting the Scene
Does anyone else think that knowing the setting for a story or novel can help with your enjoyment and understanding when reading? I came to this conclusion when I was on holiday recently. 

I had not visited the beautiful island of Crete before and wanted to get to know something about its history. As a teacher, I have lost count of the times I have told or read the story of 'Theseus and the Minotaur' to classes of children so you can imagine how excited I was to be visiting the site of the Palace of Knossos, the home of King Minos, which has always been associated with the myth.  Minos, after getting advice from the oracle at Delphi, had Daedalus, the famed architect and inventor, build a huge labyrinth near his palace at Knossos. The purpose of the labyrinth was to hold the Minotaur, a monster which was half-bull and half-man. 

On our journey there, our guide retold a version of the story of Theseus in such detail and with so much conviction that we were captivated. 

Sir Arthur John Evans (1851-1941) was the archaeologist responsible for unearthing the Palace of Knossos. He believed that the legendary kingdom of King Minos was real and used clues he found in the myths and legends to prove it even though he came up against strong opposition to his views. 

As we walked around the site, I liked to think that the reconstructed frescos often depicting bulls and the twisting passages of a possible labyrinth were part of a story that had always been so popular with my pupils.  

In complete contrast to that story which has been around for thousands of years and on the recommendation of a guest at the hotel where we were staying, I read a novel written in 2005, also set in Crete. 'The Island' by Victoria Hislop is about a leper colony on Spinalonga, a small island off the north coast. It is set both in the present day when a first-generation English girl travels to Crete to find out more about her Greek heritage and in the 1930s. What unravels is the tragic tale of four generations of women in the Petrakis family whose lives are affected by leprosy. I think the fact that I was there on the actual island of Crete and could recognise the descriptions of the countryside and places mentioned, the food and drink referred to and some of the characteristics of people I'd observed in the local shops and tavernas made it more credible and enjoyable to read. I didn't even know about the leper colony  which closed in 1957 until I read about the boat trips to the now uninhabited island which are on offer. I spoke to the owner of a book shop where the book was displayed, taking pride of place in the shop window.  He told me that it was based on true stories and that the author had researched the novel well. I loved the way the layers of family secrets were revealed and recommend the book, especially if you can travel Crete to read it!

Holiday Reading
Next Tuesday, I'm flying to Crete for a two week holiday and today I am deciding what I shall take to read. It's the one time when I don't feel guilty about spending hours with my head in a book or reading my Kindle! Many a time, pre- Kindle, did I have to take books out of my case as I'd gone over the weight allowance only to 'run' out of novels towards the end of the holiday. 

Hotels often have a swap-a-book scheme though, where you can leave a finished book in return for a fresh one to read. This is how I came across Ferney by James Long.  This is a beautifully written book and has all the elements that I enjoy -  a love story, historical content, mystery and suspense so that I couldn't put it down, as well as warm and credible characters. 

I do like the feel of a traditionally printed book and being able to flick back through the pages to check or re-read parts.  But now, I can download as many novels as I want so there will be no worries about overloading my case, no greasy suncream finger marks on my precious books and even the thickest saga will appear light in my hand. So what do I choose?

I haven't written much more of my novel lately so I'm hoping that reading a lot on holiday will get me back writing on my return. My dual narrative story is about a family which holds secrets - whose family doesn't, you may ask? - and is set in 1947 and 1965. I'm trying to read as many family saga type novels set just after the war or in the 1960s. I seem to be drawn to novels where there are two POVs or two time settings. One such book that I enjoyed was The Hand That First Held Mine by Maggie O'Farrell. The story tells the stories of two women, separated by fifty years but connected in ways that neither could ever have expected. Thank you Lynne for the recommendation.

Of course, not all the books I'm buying are in the style of the novel I'm trying to write. Here are a few that I'm looking forward to reading:

- When No One Was Watching by Debz Hobbs Wyatt
- Father Unknown by Lesley Pearse

Creative Frontiers

Creative Frontiers is an on-line site which is a '... meeting place for everyone who writes fact or fiction.' 

'Creative Frontiers aims to interest, entertain and to stimulate writers of all sorts: those who have still to finish their first composition; those who have created and sold many pieces.  The site is for those who write to live and those who live to write.

We want visitors to find ideas and methods that will enable them to push their writing right up to and maybe even across a creative frontier.'

The Liebster Award
The first I heard about the Liebster Award was when I read a post on my blog from Teagan Kearney saying that she had nominated me. I have been following her on her excellent blog, Writing My Novel - No Working Title Yet for almost as long as I have been writing my own blog. In Teagan's words, I've been 'Liebstered!'

Here are the questions that Teagan set for me to answer
  • What is your earliest childhood memory?
Now this answer gives away my age! When I was very young, we lived a few doors away from my grandad and I spent a lot of time at his house. One day, I found an old HMV gramophone and lots of 78 rpm records tucked away in his shed. From then on, I loved winding it up and playing the records. It would keep me quiet for hours.
  • What was the first story/poem you ever wrote?
I can't remember any of the stories or poems I wrote as a child but I started writing fiction for the first time when I retired. I joined a local writing group and the first story I wrote had to open with the words 'She peered closer inside the church.....' It was about a newborn baby being abandoned on the chancel steps.
  •  Post a link to your favourite poem.
Those of you who follow my Jan Baynham Writer page on Face Book will know how much I love the work of Dylan Thomas. His centenary is being celebrated this year and I have been reminded of his wonderful command of language. It was hard to choose a favourite but I think it has to be 'Fern Hill'.   • Who do you admire, in terms of style, as a writer? 
My work-in-progress novel has a dual narrative, Clara's story set in 1965 and Rose's story set in 1947. My tutor, Lynne, suggested that I read Maggie O'Farrell's novel 'The Hand That First Held Mine' to see how two narratives can work alongside each other. Since then I have read and enjoyed two more of Maggie O'Farrell's novels.
  • What is your current writing goal?
My main goal is to finish the first draft of my novel. I keep getting distracted by writing short stories!
  • Who is your celebrity crush?
No contest here - it has to be George Clooney!
  • Post a link to your favourite painting.
Again, it was difficult to pick a favourite but I love this one entitled 'Snowdon From Ty Obri' by Kyffin Williams.





  •  What do you think is your biggest obstacle to achieving your goals?
I need to spend time getting immersed in my novel and getting to know my characters really well. At the moment, I leave too long in between writing sessions so that I have to pick up the thread again when I have left the novel to write other stories.
  • What wish is at the top of your bucket list?
At the very top has to be every writers dream, I'd love to get published and see my novel in print.

A Lonely Writer's Life Or Is It?

About a year ago, it hit me. I'd just completed a novel writing course and suddenly I was on my own - no weekly writing tasks, no sharing of ideas with other writers in the group, just me and the computer. I'd started to send off the odd short story and I continued to write my novel but I knew if I was going to make any progress on my writing journey, it was most definitely up to me. It could be quite a lonely life or so I thought.

So, what has changed to make me think I am now part of the writing community? I still shut myself away and write at my computer alone. I don't attend any writing classes at the moment either. Here are some of the ways that I feel supported as a writer:
  • Meeting regularly with writing buddies A group of us who met in the short story course, 'Telling Tales', meets every three weeks. We share our stories and set writing tasks for our next meeting. I also meet with writing friends in Newport.
  • Alfie Dog Fiction Having the first of my stories published on the short story download site was a milestone for me. Not only is Rosemary, the editor, very supportive with constructive advice about the writing submitted but you feel you are part of a world wide community of writers. There is an Alfie Dog forum where you can communicate with other authors on a whole range of topics. 
  • On-line critique group As I mentioned in a previous post, I am fortunate to be a member of an on-line critique group. Last July, on the Alfie Dog forum, I spotted a post from a writer called Patsy Collins who was asking if anyone was interested in an on-line critique group looking at stories aimed at the Womag market. Our web-site started by another member, Susan Jones - of 'Giggle Blog' fame ;-) -  may be found here at Write-critical. Susan also manages Write a Novel, another critique group which is run along similar lines. 
  • Twitter Having a Twitter account (@JanBayLit) and following other writers is something I would definitely recommend. I have learned so much from articles, recommended books, forthcoming programmes or events in tweets by fellow writers. I like to be proactive and am grateful to my growing band of followers for their support. One writer I follow, Sandra, (@tonisands) got in touch to invite me to a lunch time meeting with the local RNA members. Here we are having lunch at the Barocco in Cardiff this week. Thank you everyone for making me so welcome!
  • Writing Blog As you know, I started this in January and like to post regularly on the same day each week. Yes, it takes time and maybe takes time away from writing my stories or novel but I like the fact I am mapping out my journey as a writer. I also benefit from following other writers' blogs. The list alongside is growing ever longer. Often it's reassuring to know those writers experience the same highs and lows that I do and the ones who don't have many 'lows' are my inspiration!
  • Writer page on Face Book Last weekend, I started a new page Jan Baynham Writer. I'd love it if you 'liked' the page after reading some of the posts. Thanks! 
So you see that in the last twelve months, I have enjoyed so much support from real writing friends and the on-line community that perhaps it's not such a lonely journey after all. A big thank you to you all! :-)

Woman's Weekly Writing Workshop
On Friday 11th April, I left Cardiff on the 6.55 am train from Central Station to arrive at Paddington just before nine o'clock. This would allow me plenty of time to get to the workshop by coffee time...or so I thought! Now, I'd always prided myself on my map reading skills, having navigated all over France on annual family holidays in the days before SAT navs. No, what I hadn't mastered was the map app on my brand new iPhone! 'What!' I can hear my Geography lecturer daughter screaming in disbelief. Yes, Jo, I took the wrong turning out of the tube station, got totally confused by the little blue man 'walking' and got myself completely lost! To cut a very long story short, I eventually got to the Blue Fin Building in Southwark by flagging down a taxi driver who got me there just as Gaynor Davies, the Editor, was starting her welcome - apologies, embarrassment, flustered, hot and bothered! :-( 

The room was full of people like me hoping to find out what it takes to be a Woman's Weekly writer. We were all seated around a very long table that seemed to fill the room. I soon spotted my friend Helen at the other end and Glyn, another writing buddy who was attending, was seated a few seats away from me. Gaynor opened the proceedings with a warm welcome and introduced our tutor for the day, Della Galton. 

Gaynor began by talking about a typical Woman's Weekly reader and recommended that we try to see the reader not the age, a reader who may be interested in travel, an optimist, involved with family and homes and community minded. When reading the stories in Woman's Weekly you will find characters like this with whom the readers can relate and feel empathy. She then listed the sort of stories that would interest the editors:

  • there should be warmth, especially in the way the characters behave
  • stories that are character not plot driven where there is conflict or crisis, for the character to have a problem and the character has to change 
  • more humorous stories
  • stories that end on a note of optimism but the ending should not be 'tied up in a bow'.
On style, the editors do not want too many adjectives, adverbs or images. Keep to 'said' for dialogue. They do not want you to tell your readers everything. Respect them and let them work things out for themselves.

On the length of stories, she mentioned one pagers (900 - 1000 words) and two pagers (1800-2000). Apparently the awkward lengths are the 1200-1800 word stories as they can't do much with these from a lay-out point of view. At this point, I was trying to think how long was the last story I submitted to WW!

Della then led us on a timed writing exercise. We suggested characters, problems and settings for her 'random idea generator' and she then asked us to write an attention grabbing paragraph about a mother who was having marital problems and the setting was a station. It was good to see everyone busy writing away in complete silence but it soon became apparent that we had to read our efforts out. This didn't turn out to be as unnerving as I thought it would be because it was great to see how everyone had interpreted the scenario so differently. 

Before lunch, Della talked to us about ideas, plot and developing short story characters which was preparation for another writing exercise in the afternoon. 

Lunch time was a great opportunity to catch up with the other writers and admire the impressive Blue Fin Building. (It was a bit of a blur when I arrived!) The views from the roof top terrace canteen are amazing and the food is pretty good too!





The afternoon began with an exercise where we completed a chart for the main character of a story. Knowing everything about our characters will make them credible and explain why they behave in the way they do. Time was spent reading these out and explaining how the stories would develop and Della and Gaynor interjected with useful comments and advice.

The day ended with a session from Della about why stories are rejected. Here are some of the reasons she covered:
  • predictable endings
  • overused theme
  • underdeveloped characters
  • insufficient plot
  • too much plot
  • wrong market 
  • bad luck!
All we have to do now is finish the stories we started in the workshop and put into practice what we've learned. I wish! Seriously though, I highly recommend attending one of the workshops. The next ones are listed on the Woman's Weekly website as taking place on  August 15th and September 1st but I'd check to see if places are still available. PS. The walk back to Southwark tube station on our way home took a matter of minutes so I asked Helen how she'd found her way to the workshop that morning. "Oh, I did it the old-fashioned way," she said. "I asked directions and the man said 'Just follow the orange lamp posts!'" Now, why didn't I think of that? Hee-hee!
